About our Elixirs

Casa Mascia Elixirs are made in small batches of 5 gallons or less by two creative and imaginative medical doctors who like to “ant” around their farm making stuff.

Metaphorically speaking, the Elixirs are the bottled essence of the Doctors’ Joie De Vivre.

The base spirit is white rum from the local Orange Walk Distillery and the sweetening agents are brown sugar (muscovado) and white cane sugar from the cane farms of Orange Walk. The water used is fresh Toledo rainwater. The additional flavourings are all natural; spices, herbs, fruit and flowers are grown on Casa Mascia farm and personally hand-picked to flavour the aromatic elixirs.

Why Elixirs?

The definition of Elixir is a sweet liquid used orally for medicinal purposes.

The definition of a liqueur is a sweetened liquor flavoured with spices, herbs or flowers which is viewed as a recreational drink.

Since we are medical doctors, we have consciously used the word “Elixir” in order to emphasize the medicinal properties of the beverages. At the same time, the promotion of the liqueur for the purposes of enjoyment is equally important.

The Elixirs are stored in glass jars and racked every 1 to 2 months to achieve clarity. The final product is usually about 12 to 18 months old. Occasionally, some elixirs are aged for more than 5 years in very small batches. When these are made available to the public, they are of limited number and each bottle is batch marked for the purposes of authenticity.

The final Elixir is bottled in a glass apothecary bottle and sealed with red wax in keeping with the traditions of an apothecary.

Availability of different elixir flavours are dependent on the season. There are four flavours which are available all year round: Lemongrass, Limecello, Culantro, Ginger, Cacao Fruit and Chocolate Velvet.

We make many other flavours according to what is bearing on the farm, please email for availability if you cannot find what you want.
